ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has recommended legislative measures to ensure that local government elections are held on time.
The ECP has sent an official letter to the Secretary of Parliamentary Affairs regarding this matter. The letter states that local governments are a crucial pillar of the country’s democratic system, providing services at the local level and addressing citizens’ issues.
Recognizing the national importance of local elections, the ECP recommended amendments to Section 219 of the Elections Act 2017. These amendments would ensure that elections are held promptly whenever the tenure of a local government ends or it is dissolved, in accordance with existing local government laws.
The letter also noted that governments often delay local elections. It emphasized that conducting timely local elections is a shared responsibility of the federal government, provincial governments, and the Election Commission of Pakistan.
