ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has issued a statement rejecting what it describes as “baseless propaganda” against it in the wake of a recent Supreme Court verdict on reserved seats in the national and provincial Assemblies.

The ECP said blaming the commission for political failures is “inappropriate” and condemned the ongoing criticism as false and contrary to facts.

According to the official statement, the Election Commission asserted that it has always fulfilled its constitutional and legal responsibilities. It said the Supreme Court has repeatedly endorsed the Commission’s stance on multiple occasions.

The ECP cited examples including the Supreme Court’s endorsement of its position on secret balloting in Senate elections, the validation of its decision in the Daska by-election as a constitutional measure, and the approval of its interpretation in the PTI intra-party election case.

The commission also pointed out that its decision to delist the All Pakistan Muslim League (APML) was upheld by the Supreme Court.

The statement further noted that other political parties have also been delisted for violating the law, and that the Lahore High Court’s decision on Punjab election tribunals was overturned in favor of the Election Commission’s position.

The commission’s stance was also maintained in the case regarding reserved seats for the Sunni Ittehad Council.

Emphasizing its independence, the ECP said it does not take decisions under political or public pressure but acts solely based on the Constitution, law, and evidence. It declared that it would not be intimidated by any party or interest group’s tactics, describing the attempt to shift blame for failures onto the Commission as unacceptable.
