ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan has refused to delay the Feb 8 general elections in the country and rejected a resolution passed by the Senate of Pakistan in this regard.
In a letter to the upper house of parliament, the election commission said that the caretaker government had been directed to ensure law and order during the elections. Moreover, it added, polls were held in the past in the winter season so these will not be delayed owing to the cold weather.
It said that the schedule for the elections had been issued after consultations with the president and on the direction of the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
Over a week after a resolution landed in the Senate and was passed by the house with just 14 members in attendance seeking a delay to the Feb 8 election, another move was introduced for the same purpose.
It is strange some members of the upper house of parliament are hell bent to get the already delayed elections postponed even though the house has no role in holding the elections.
So far, two resolutions have been submitted to the Senate and one of them passed calling for a delay in the elections.
The first resolution was filed by independent senator Drlawar Khan abd the second one by another independent senator Hidayatullah seeking to postpone the already delayed polls.
Another resolution by a JI senator called for holding the elections without further delay.
The first resolution was passed even though the house lacked quorum. The passage of the resolution was severely criticized by political parties and others.
