ECP reserves verdict on plea against PTI’s election symbol

Petitioner says Bat should not be allotted to PTI for forthcoming elections.

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan on Tuesday reserved its judgement on a petition seeking directives for taking back he election symbol of ‘Bat’ from the PTI.

A five-member bench headed by Chief Election Commissioner Sikendar Sultan heard the petition filed by Aun Chaudhry of the newly-formed Istihkam-e-Pakistan Party.

Lawyer for the petitiorer contended before the bench that the ECP should not allot the symbol of Bat to the PTI. On this, the chief election commissioner said it had already been allotted to the PTI.

The counsel said the PTI had been given the symbol in the previous elections and the ECP should not allot it to the party led by Imran Khan for the forthcoming elections.

The chief election commissioner said there was already a petition pending with the commission seeking withdrawal of the symbol from the PTI.

The lawer requested the commission to club the petition of his client with that. On this, the bench reserved its ruling.

Three applications have already been filed in the Election Commission of Pakistan seeking a ban on the PTI from using its electoral symbol of ‘Bat’ and disqualification and removal of Imran Khan as the chairman of the party.

One of the application said that the PTI should also be restrained from using ‘Bat’ as the election symbol.
