ECP to hear plea for removal of biased caretaker ministers

Notices issued to caretaker prime minister, privatization minister and prime minister's adviser.

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan has admitted for hearing an application seeking removal of biased and politically-affiliated members of the caretaker federal cabinet.

The applicant stated that it was necessary to remove all ministers from the caretaker government who had sympathy or had been affiliated with any political party in the past.

After admitting the application, the ECP issued notices to the caretaker prime minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar, privatization minister Fawad Hasan Fawad and prime minister’s adviser Ahad Cheema. The commission will hear the plea on December 19.

The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Friday night suspended a ruling of the Lahore High Court and directed the Election Commission of Pakistan to announce the schedule of the February 2024 general election at once (today) to ensure the elections on Feb 8.

The main job of the caretaker government is to facilitate the ECP in holding free and fair elections. However, the application submitted to the ECP said that the ministers having political affiliation with any party could influence the election process and their removal was imperative for fair polls.
