Emergency closed-door UNSC consultations sought

Special Correspondent

UNITED NATIONS: Amid rising tensions in South Asia, Pakistan has formally requested an emergency closed-door session of the United Nations Security Council to discuss the deteriorating situation, particularly as regard to the Indian occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

The move comes in response to what Islamabad describes as a “serious risk of escalation” between the two nuclear-armed neighbors, posing a direct threat to both regional and global peace and security.

In a letter to the Security Council, Pakistan cited the urgent need for the international community to take cognizance of the situation.

Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, is scheduled to issue a statement at the UN Security Council stakeout area following the consultations on Monday afternoon.

The closed-door format of the meeting indicates that sensitive security and diplomatic concerns will be discussed.
