EU expresses concern over Pakistan-India tensions, urges restraint

We have urged both parties to avoid further deterioration of situation and to pursue negotiations, says statement.

BRUSSELS: The European Union has urged Pakistan and India to exercise restraint amid rising tensions, and to resolve issues through dialogue.

EU Foreign Affairs Chief Kaja Kallas contacted the foreign ministers of both countries to express concern over the escalating situation.

In her statement, Kaja Kallas said, “We have urged both parties to avoid further deterioration of the situation and to pursue negotiations. Escalation serves no one’s interest.”

It is worth noting that on April 22, a tragic shooting incident occurred at the tourist site of Pahalgam in Indian-administered Kashmir, resulting in the death of 26 people and injuries to dozens. Following the attack, India, without presenting any evidence, blamed Pakistan and unilaterally suspended the Indus Waters Treaty.

Pakistan strongly rejected the allegations, condemned the Pahalgam attack, and offered full cooperation for a neutral investigation. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated that Pakistan is fully prepared to assist in a transparent probe.

Meanwhile, India has issued threats of strong action against Pakistan, to which Pakistan’s political and military leadership responded firmly, warning that any aggression would be met with a strong and memorable response.

According to international observers, the EU’s intervention could help bring both nations back to the negotiating table, provided both sides show seriousness and willingness to de-escalate.
