Islamabad: On July 30, 2025, the federal cabinet, under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, approved the National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy 2025, marking a pivotal moment in Pakistan’s technological and economic development.

This policy aims to create a comprehensive AI ecosystem that democratizes access to artificial intelligence, improves public services, and fosters innovation and employment opportunities.

Key Features of the National AI Policy

The National AI Policy 2025 outlines ambitious goals, including the training of one million AI professionals by 2030 and the establishment of the AI Innovation Fund and AI Venture Fund. These initiatives will encourage private sector involvement, the development of 50,000 AI-driven civic projects, and the creation of 1,000 local AI products over the next five years. The policy also proposes the distribution of 3,000 annual AI scholarships, with a special emphasis on creating opportunities for women and individuals with disabilities.

A Focus on Education and Security

A major highlight of the policy is its focus on strengthening Pakistan’s AI education sector, ensuring accessibility to all through scholarships and research initiatives. Additionally, the policy emphasizes enhancing cybersecurity, strengthening national data security, and ensuring compliance with international AI regulations. The establishment of an AI Council will oversee the execution of the policy, ensuring alignment with the country’s goals.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised the Ministry of IT and its partners for their proactive efforts, noting that AI will revolutionize Pakistan’s economy by boosting productivity in agriculture, public services, and governance.

Previous Developments in AI and Tech Initiatives

The decision comes in the wake of several significant technological advancements. Earlier this month, Pakistani AI platform SOCByte introduced the nation’s first AI-powered cybersecurity program. Furthermore, the Ministry of Finance had allocated 2,000 megawatts of electricity to power AI data centers and cryptocurrency mining, reinforcing Pakistan’s commitment to becoming a leader in digital innovation.
