Federal Cabinet Approves Printing of New Currency Notes

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has decided to print new currency notes after the proposal received approval from the federal cabinet.

A cabinet committee has also been formed to deliberate on and finalize the new designs of the banknotes.

The decision was taken during a Federal Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif at the Prime Minister’s House in Islamabad.

During the meeting, the Ministry of Finance briefed the cabinet on the new designs of banknotes to be issued by the State Bank of Pakistan.

The cabinet was informed that the new currency notes are being designed in line with modern international standards, and services of international experts have been engaged for this purpose. New designs will be introduced for banknotes of Rs100, Rs500, Rs1,000, and Rs5,000.

According to the briefing, the new notes will feature enhanced security features to prevent counterfeiting. The designs will reflect Pakistan’s regional and geographical diversity as well as its historical landmarks. Important social themes such as women’s contribution to national development and climate change awareness will also be incorporated into the designs.

The Federal Cabinet approved the formation of a cabinet committee to further review and finalize the new banknote designs.

In addition, the cabinet directed that the draft Private Hajj Policy 2027-30, particularly regarding third-party registration and scrutiny of private Hajj operator companies, be sent back to the Hajj Policy Committee for further consideration in light of cabinet members’ recommendations.

The cabinet also ratified decisions taken in meetings of the Cabinet Committee on Energy held on December 24, 2025, and the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) held on December 23, 2025.
