ISLAMABAD: In a decisive move to tackle the ongoing sugar crisis, the federal government has taken full control of all sugar stocks across the country, previously held by sugar mills.

According to the Ministry of Food, around 1.9 million metric tons of sugar have been shifted from private mills to government custody. The action was prompted by concerns over an artificial shortage and fears of further price hikes.

Officials confirmed that the names of owners from 18 sugar mills have been placed on the Exit Control List (ECL). The list of those restricted from leaving the country is expected to be made public in the coming days.

To ensure transparency and prevent hoarding, FBR agents have been deployed to all sugar mills for monitoring. Additionally, a track-and-trace system has been implemented to supervise sugar inventories. The government has assumed full control of the country’s sugar supply chain in an effort to stabilize the market.

Authorities state that these steps aim to curb speculation and ensure price stability for consumers amid rising inflation.
