Federal Minister Wants Karachi As Federal Territory

KARACHI: Federal Minister Mustafa Kamal has called for Karachi to be brought under the direct control of the federal government, describing the situation in the city as “genocidal” and labeling it a case of “democratic terrorism.”

Speaking to the media in Karachi, Kamal said, “Karachi, which drives Pakistan’s economy, must be made the country’s economic capital and placed under federal control.” He criticized political parties for their role in the city’s governance, claiming that successive governments have ignored Karachi’s problems due to political pressures.

Kamal referenced past incidents, stating that while the MQM was blamed for certain incidents in the city during previous administrations, the current MQM is no longer responsible. He emphasized that political disagreements continue to prevent effective governance, saying, “Karachi is dying, its people are dying, yet no one is paying attention.”

He appealed to the state and its institutions to take action, urging that under Articles 148 and 149 of the Constitution, Karachi should be declared a federal territory, in line with the vision of former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, and recognized as Pakistan’s economic capital.

Kamal also criticized the current government, stating that it has relied on the PPP in various political crises, while Karachi continues to suffer. He called on the government to stop what he called “democratic terrorism” and take immediate action to save the city.
