ISLAMABAD: Finland has revealed plans to close its embassy in Islamabad by 2026 as part of a broader review of its diplomatic network.
The decision aims to refocus Finland’s resources on countries considered more strategically important for political and economic engagement.
The Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that, along with Islamabad, embassies in Kabul and Yangon will also be closed next year.
Officials cited changing political conditions in these countries and limited trade ties with Finland as key factors behind the move.
Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen emphasized that Finland must adapt its diplomatic presence to a rapidly evolving world, ensuring its foreign policy remains effective and competitive on the global stage.
Finland had previously closed its Pakistan embassy in 2012 due to financial challenges, reopening it in 2022. The closures will take effect following the President of Finland’s formal approval, ushering in a new chapter in the country’s international diplomatic strategy.
