Floods & Landslides Leave Over 110 Dead In Occupied Kashmir

Rivers and streams in Jammu, Samba, Reasi, Doda and Kishtwar districts swelled to dangerous levels.

MUZAFFARABAD: A week of relentless rainfall has unleashed devastation across Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, with flash floods, landslides, and a cloudburst claiming more than 110 lives and displacing thousands.

According to the Kashmir Media Service (KMS), the situation has turned critical as rivers and streams in Jammu, Samba, Reasi, Doda, and Kishtwar districts have swelled to dangerous levels, sweeping away homes and infrastructure.

So far, more than 12,000 residents have been evacuated to safer areas, while at least 50 villages remain cut off from the rest of the region.

Authorities have ordered the closure of all educational institutions until August 31 as a precautionary measure. The scale of destruction has left thousands without shelter and severely disrupted daily life across the valley.

In Jammu district, the impact has been particularly severe. On Thursday alone, four more people were killed in flash floods, while a massive landslide proved catastrophic, burying dozens beneath the debris.

At least 34 people lost their lives in that incident, with 20 others injured and receiving treatment in hospitals. Rescue teams continue operations around the clock, attempting to clear the rubble and reach those trapped.

The disaster has also crippled transportation and communication systems throughout the region. Dozens of key roads have been blocked by landslides, halting movement and delaying relief operations.

Train services have been badly affected as well, with at least 58 trains canceled due to flooding and damaged tracks. The combined impact of natural calamities has left Kashmir facing one of its worst humanitarian and infrastructural crises in recent years.
