ISLAMABAD: The Foreign Office spokesperson has confirmed that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will participate in the upcoming Gaza Board of Peace meeting. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar will also accompany him to the session.
During the weekly press briefing, Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi stated that eight Muslim countries will be represented at the meeting. He reiterated Pakistan’s firm support for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on pre-1967 borders.
The spokesperson also addressed regional and international matters. He said Pakistan has initiated legal proceedings against India at the International Court of Arbitration, though India has not appeared before the court. Emphasizing that the Indus Waters Treaty is a recognized international agreement between the two countries, he stressed that Pakistan will not compromise on its water rights.
Commenting on human rights concerns, Andrabi expressed alarm over mob violence and alleged persecution of Muslims and Christians in India. He further noted that a recent United Nations report supports Pakistan’s stance regarding Afghanistan and terrorist groups. Pakistan, he added, remains in contact with the UN regarding counterterrorism measures.
Regarding security issues, the spokesperson said the matter of a recent ISIS attack in Islamabad is being raised internationally and claimed that the mastermind of the attack is based in Afghanistan.
On sports diplomacy, he criticized the politicization of cricket, calling it regrettable to use sports as a political tool. He said Pakistan’s decisions to play matches against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka were made in accordance with sporting principles.
He also expressed Pakistan’s support for dialogue between Iran and the United States, reaffirming Islamabad’s commitment to resolving disputes through peaceful negotiations.
