ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has strongly condemned recent remarks made by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling them provocative and a threat to regional peace and stability.
In a statement issued by the Foreign Office, the spokesperson said that Modi’s comments were not surprising but reflective of a continued pattern of hostility towards Pakistan.
The spokesperson criticized the Indian Prime Minister for threatening to weaponize water, an issue governed by international treaties, and labeled it a violation of global norms. “Such leadership that aspires for global respect must first evaluate its words and conscience,” the statement read.
Highlighting the role of ideology in the current Indian government’s actions, the spokesperson said that ideological affiliates of the ruling regime have normalized hate speech and violence against minorities. Pakistan urged India to respect international law instead of portraying itself as a victim.
During India’s ongoing election campaign, the spokesperson warned that war-mongering statements damage prospects for peace and stability in the region.
“We call upon Indian youth to reject the politics of hate and move towards a future based on dignity and mutual cooperation,” the spokesperson added.
The remarks came in response to a controversial statement made by Prime Minister Modi during an election rally in Gujarat two days earlier, where he said, “To free Pakistan from terrorism, the people of Pakistan must rise up. Live in peace, eat your bread otherwise my bullet is ready.”
Pakistan dismissed Modi’s remarks as political theater aimed at electioneering and criticized the use of aggressive rhetoric for electoral gains.
