PARIS: French President Emmanuel Macron has announced that France has decided to officially recognize the State of Palestine, a move aimed at promoting a just and lasting peace in the Middle East.

In a letter addressed to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, which was shared publicly on social media, Macron emphasized that the recognition is part of France’s broader commitment to peace and stability in the region. “France has decided to recognize the State of Palestine in order to support a fair and sustainable peace in the Middle East,” Macron wrote.

He added that the formal announcement will be made during his address at the United Nations General Assembly in September. Macron stressed the urgent need for an immediate ceasefire, the release of all hostages, and the provision of large-scale humanitarian aid for the people of Gaza.

The French president also called for the disarmament of Hamas, the protection and reconstruction of Gaza, and the eventual establishment of a fully recognized Palestinian state as a long-term solution.

“The French people want peace in the Middle East,” Macron said. “It is our duty as French citizens to demonstrate, alongside Israelis, Palestinians, and our European and international partners, that peace is possible.”

This landmark decision marks a significant shift in France’s foreign policy and is expected to influence broader international discussions on Palestinian statehood and the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
