GAZA: Hamas released all 20 Israeli hostages held in Gaza, marking a pivotal moment in the ongoing conflict, on Monday.
This release is part of a broader ceasefire agreement brokered by former U.S. President Donald Trump, aimed at ending the two-year war between Israel and Hamas.
The hostages were handed over to the International Committee of the Red Cross and subsequently transported to Israeli military bases for reunification with their families or immediate medical attention.
The release follows the earlier handover of seven hostages and is part of a phased exchange that includes the return of 28 deceased captives’ remains. In return, Israel is set to release approximately 2,000 Palestinian detainees, including several serving life sentences.
The release coincided with U.S. President Donald Trump’s arrival in Israel, where he addressed the Knesset and is scheduled to co-chair a peace summit in Egypt with over 20 world leaders.
Trump hailed the ceasefire as a “new dawn” for the region, emphasizing the importance of sustained peace efforts. However, key issues such as Hamas’s disarmament and the future governance of Gaza remain unresolved.
The ceasefire has facilitated the entry of up to 600 aid trucks per day into Gaza, providing much-needed relief to the famine-stricken population.
Residents are returning to devastated areas, and efforts are underway to recover bodies from the rubble. Despite these positive developments, challenges persist, including the need for reconstruction and addressing the political complexities of Gaza’s future.
This historic exchange represents a significant step toward peace, though the path ahead remains fraught with challenges. Continued international cooperation and dialogue will be essential in ensuring a lasting resolution to the conflict.
