Girl from DI Khan reaches India to marry lover

Javeria says she waited for five years to cross border due to repeated rejection of her application for Indian visa.

ISLAMABAD: A girl from Dera Ismail Khan in Khyber Pakthunkhwa has reached India to marry an Indian man with whom she befriended on social media five years ago.

Three years ago, their engagement was finalized after consent from the families of the girl and the Indian man.

According to Indian media, Javeria Khanum arrived at Attari, crossing the Wagah border.

She  said her application for a visa to visit India for marrying Samir was turned down by the Indian high commission in Islamabad thrice. The Covid pandemic also hampered the two to reach out to each other.

After getting a 45-day visa this time around, Javeria finally reached India where she was given a warm welcome.

Talking to the Indian media, the DI Khan girl said she was very excited to be with her lover. She said they were planning to get married in tbd first week of the new year.

Her would-be husband Samir said she was thankful to the Indian government for issuing visa to Javeria. He said that the two governments should relax visa restrictions for young people who want to marry across the border.

It may be noted that scores of young people belonging to India and Pakistan have befriended on social media and got married. 

A Pakistani mother of four early this year cross border into India and married a man there while an Indian woman, who was also married, reached Upper Dir district of Khyber Pakthunkhwa to marry a man there.
