GHIZER: A glacial lake outburst in Tali Das village of District Ghizer, Gilgit-Baltistan, has wreaked havoc, leaving over a hundred houses reduced to rubble and displacing scores of families.
According to initial reports, the floodwaters also blocked the Ghizer River, forming an artificial lake that has put as many as 906 households at risk, with many already badly affected.
This is not the first such calamity in the region. Earlier, a powerful flood torrent had swept through Rawshan, another part of Ghizer district, completely destroying Tali Das village and forcing urgent rescue operations. At that time, more than 50 stranded villagers were evacuated to safety.
Eyewitnesses say the timely warning call made by a local shepherd enabled many residents to flee before the floodwaters hit, preventing further loss of life.
Authorities and rescue teams are monitoring the artificial lake closely, while locals fear further devastation if the water breaches its natural barrier.
