Govt decides to impose ban on PTI

Information minister says progress of Pakistan and PTI as a political party cannot go together.

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has decided to ban the PTI as a political party, the minister for information told a press conference on Monday.

He said a formal decision would be taken by the federal cabinet soon.

Atta Tarar, the minister, said that on May 9 (2023), state institutions were attacked and Imran Khan’s party promoted politics of violence.

He also said that a treason case under Article 6 of the constitution would be initiated in the Supreme Court against former president Arif Alvi, the PTI founder and former speaker of the National Assembly Qasim Suri.

The minister said that the federal government and its allies have also decided to file an appeal against the Supreme Court verdict in the reserved seats case.

The apex court in its judgement declared the PTI a parliamentary party and entitled to get reserved seats for women and minorities in accordance with the general seats it won in the February 8th elections. However, in case the PTI gets the reserved seats it would become the largest party in the National Assembly and the ruling PML-N would be the second.

The move to ban the PTI comes as a tactic to vanish the party from the scene and save the government.
