No Plans for 28th Constitutional Amendment, Says Govt

ISLAMABAD: Despite recent remarks by several government members, senior federal officials have categorically denied that any proposal for a 28th constitutional amendment is currently under consideration.

Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr. Tariq Fazal Chaudhry firmly rejected speculation that the government is preparing a new constitutional amendment package. Speaking to media, he stated that both he and Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar had already clarified that “there is no 28th amendment under review.”

A senior official at the Prime Minister’s Office similarly confirmed that no initiative for a fresh constitutional amendment has been taken up at the PM Office.

Chaudhry stressed that no meeting or internal consultation has been conducted on the matter, describing the ongoing public debate as a product of media conjecture.

He explained that certain proposals originally included in the 27th Amendment package later dropped due to lack of political consensus could potentially be reconsidered at some point, yet no steps have been initiated toward framing a 28th amendment at present.

Speculation surrounding the issue escalated after Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political and Public Affairs Rana Sanaullah reportedly stated that the government would “soon” introduce a 28th amendment, suggesting that the proposed changes might address local governments, the National Finance Commission (NFC), and health-related governance reforms.

He indicated that consultations on these areas were underway and that any progress would depend on achieving broad political agreement.

Media reports also attributed comments regarding the amendment to Minister of State for Law Barrister Adeel Malik, but he has not responded to repeated requests for clarification over the past several days.
