Govt formulates new mechanism to monitor Afghan refugees

New arrangement made in collaboration with UN refugee agency, say officials.

ISLAMABAD: The government has decided to formulate a new mechanism to regulate the entry and exit of Afghan refugees in the country and improve the system to monitor their movement.

The report said that the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) will take into its custody the proof of registration (POR) and the Afghan Citizen Card at the Torkham border.

The report added that on the voluntary return of the refugees, they would be provided a form at the time of departure at the border on the basis of which the Afghan nationals would get a grant once back home. This arrangement has been made in collaboration with the UN refugee agency.

Sources said that the cards of those going back to Afghanistan without the UNHCR would be punched and kept with the FIA and later these cards would be permanently blocked by NADRA. They said that the new mechanism was aimed at improving the monitoring of the Afghan refugees.
