ISLAMABAD: Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar announced that the government will soon implement a substantial reduction in electricity rates, which have already started to decline under the latest energy reforms.

Speaking during a session of the National Assembly, the Minister revealed that electricity prices have dropped from Rs. 50 per unit to Rs. 32–35 per unit, adding that citizens will notice the difference in their upcoming bills.

He emphasized that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif remains committed to the government’s solarization initiative, with significant funds allocated to accelerate renewable energy projects across the country.

Tarar further confirmed that directives regarding Independent Power Producers (IPPs) have been issued and are under active implementation.

Addressing concerns about net metering, the Minister clarified that the Cabinet has consistently rejected any proposal to discontinue the scheme, reaffirming that the government’s energy strategy remains people-centric and sustainable.

Earlier, the government had suggested fixing the net metering rate at Rs. 10 per unit, but the Prime Minister rejected the proposal following widespread public opposition.

Meanwhile, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has expressed concern over GEPCO’s unauthorized advanced metering installations and delays in payments to solar users.

Under the new policy framework, high-consumption consumers are being offered discounted rates to encourage greater use of the national grid and reduce excessive dependence on solar generation.
