ISLAMABAD: Labour Day is being observed today across Pakistan and around the world to honour the contributions of workers.

A public holiday was declared nationwide; however, many labourers, burdened by inflation and unemployment, are still out searching for daily work.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in his message to the nation on Labour Day, stated that for the first time, a National Occupational Safety and Health Profile has been introduced in Pakistan, aiming to ensure a safer and healthier work environment for labourers. He added that the government has undertaken significant legislative and administrative reforms to strengthen the protection of workers.

He emphasized the need to equip workers and youth with modern skills to meet the challenges of an evolving job market. The President further stressed the importance of creating a fair labour environment and enhancing the welfare of workers.

Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori, in his message, said, “We salute the hands that make our lives easier. Every worker is a source of pride.”

Meanwhile, Chairman of the National Industrial Relations Commission (NIRC), Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui, reaffirmed his commitment to protecting the rights of workers. He noted that the commission’s main goal is to keep the wheels of industry turning, as the livelihood of workers depends on industrial progress.
