ISLAMABAD: The government has announced an ambitious plan to pass the 27th Constitutional Amendment in both houses of parliament by November 14, signaling a major move in the country’s legislative agenda.
Media reports indicated that the decision was finalized during a meeting of the House Business Advisory Committee chaired by the National Assembly Speaker, with the Senate slated to approve the amendment first. To ensure its smooth passage, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has canceled all foreign trips for federal ministers and lawmakers
The amendment requires 64 votes in the Senate, meaning the government’s 61-member coalition will need support from three additional lawmakers from either JUI or ANP.
In the National Assembly, 224 votes are required, and the government currently has the backing of 237 members, including representatives from PML-N, PPP, MQM, and smaller parties.
PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar criticized the amendment, calling it contrary to the spirit of the Constitution.
Federal Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry condemned attempts to politicize it, while Senator Faisal Vawda confirmed that the numbers for Senate approval are sufficient.
Meanwhile, discussions on Article 243 and evolving defense requirements continue, according to Khawaja Asif.
