KARACHI: A massive fire that broke out at Gul Plaza Shopping Mall on M.A. Jinnah Road late Saturday night has claimed at least 10 lives, including a firefighter, while 55 people remain missing, rescue officials confirmed on Monday.
According to authorities, the blaze has largely been brought under control after more than 36 hours, but rescue operations continue as parts of the building have collapsed. Two major sections of the commercial plaza were severely damaged due to the intensity of the fire.
Rescue teams recovered four additional bodies earlier today, raising the total number of fatalities to 10. Officials said the identification process is still underway for several victims.
Those identified so far include Kashif, son of Younis, aged 40; Faraz, son of Abrar, aged 55; Muhammad Aamir, aged 30; and Furqan, son of Shaukat Ali, aged 25. Five other bodies have yet to be identified.
Several people were injured in the incident, including Haseeb, Waseem, Daniyal, Sadiq, Hamza, Rahim, Fahad, Jawad, Ayan, Abdullah, Usman, Fahad, Zain, and Nadir, among others. Sources from the Chhipa Welfare Association said many of the injured are in critical condition, while the identification of missing persons is ongoing.
Search and rescue teams remain at the site, using heavy machinery to clear debris and search for possible survivors trapped under the rubble. Rescue officials stated that all possible assistance will be provided to affected families.
The cause of the fire has not yet been officially determined, and a formal investigation is expected to begin once rescue operations are completed.
