New York: A gunman opened fire in Midtown Manhattan, killing five people including a police officer, before fatally shooting himself, authorities said.
The incident took place at a high-rise building on Park Avenue, known for housing the corporate offices of the National Football League (NFL) and Blackstone. Despite the building’s tight security, the suspect managed to enter armed with a rifle.
The shooter, identified as Shane Tamura, a 27-year-old resident of Las Vegas, entered the building lobby with a long rifle. A gunfire exchange occurred with police officers, after which Tamura fled to the 33rd floor, where he later took his own life.
Among the victims was Police Officer Didar Islam, who was fatally shot. Two others — a police officer and a civilian — were wounded in the attack but are reported to be in stable condition.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing a man with a long gun entering the building. “He looked focused, like he had a plan,” one witness said.
Authorities confirmed that Tamura acted alone. He had no criminal record but was previously licensed as a private investigator — a license that had expired. He was born in Hawaii and later moved to Nevada. He legally owned a handgun license.
According to U.S. media reports, this is the 254th mass shooting incident in the United States so far this year, highlighting the country’s ongoing struggle with gun violence.
