CAIRO: The first round of ceasefire negotiations aimed at ending the Gaza conflict has concluded, with Hamas presenting several key demands, including the release of senior Palestinian prisoners.

Talks between Hamas and Israel, mediated by Egypt and Qatar, will resume today in Sharm El-Sheikh.

The Hamas delegation was led by senior negotiator Khalil al-Hayya. U.S. special envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff and former President Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner also participated in the discussions.

According to Palestinian officials, Hamas outlined its positions on the release of hostages, Israel’s withdrawal from Gaza, and the proposed timeline for implementation.

Arab media reports suggest Hamas has requested the release of six prominent Palestinian prisoners and large-scale humanitarian aid for Gaza. The group seeks guarantees that Israel will honor the agreement after the hostages are freed.

Israeli security sources indicate that initial discussions will focus only on the release of hostages. Hamas will be given a few days to respond. Israel, under the Trump plan, will not initially withdraw forces beyond a so-called “yellow line” but will create a strategic buffer zone. Further withdrawals will depend on conditions agreed with the resistance group.

White House spokesperson Caroline Levitt stated that President Trump wants the hostages released as soon as possible to move to the next phase of negotiations. Lists of hostages and political prisoners are being discussed to create a suitable environment for their release.

President Trump has urged negotiators to work swiftly to end the two-year conflict. He previously warned that if Hamas refuses to relinquish control of Gaza, it will face total destruction.
