CAIRO: Hamas has released American-Israeli soldier Idan Alexander, who was held captive since the October 7, 2023 attack.
According to Arab media, he was handed over to the International Red Cross in Khan Younis, Gaza.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed the release, calling it a “gesture of goodwill” and credited Qatar and Egypt for mediating the process. He also urged for an end to the war and called for the release of all remaining hostages.
Idan Alexander is believed to be the last American citizen held captive in Gaza. His release reportedly followed negotiations between Hamas and the United States focused on a potential ceasefire.
Senior Hamas leader Dr. Khalil Al-Hayya confirmed the group’s readiness to release the American detainee and expressed support for reopening humanitarian aid corridors.
Meanwhile, Israel has expressed concerns over the U.S.-Hamas negotiations, signaling potential tensions between Washington and Tel Aviv on the matter.
