NEW DELHI: Hate-related incidents targeting Muslims and other minority communities in India increased by 13 percent in 2025, according to a new report released by the US-based research group India Hate Lab.
The report documented 1,318 hate incidents against Muslims and other minorities during 2025, compared with 1,165 incidents in 2024, marking a steady rise over the past three years.
The findings suggest a growing pattern of intolerance under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government.
According to the report, the majority of these incidents occurred in states governed by Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The highest number of cases—100 hate incidents—was recorded between April 22 and May 7, a period marked by heightened tensions between Pakistan and India.
The report also cited statements from international human rights organizations, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, which have repeatedly raised concerns over increasing discrimination, mistreatment, and hate-driven violence against minorities during Modi’s rule.
International human rights groups have warned that the climate of hostility toward religious and ethnic minorities in India is worsening.
They called upon the Modi government to take meaningful steps to protect minority rights and uphold constitutional guarantees of equality and religious freedom.
