ISLAMABAD: The brutal murder of a woman and a man in Balochistan for so-called honor has sparked outrage across the nation after a chilling video of the incident went viral on social media.
The tragic event, which occurred just days before Eidul Azha, was quickly brought to the attention of the provincial authorities.
Chief Minister of Balochistan Sardar Abdul Quddus Bizenjo directed the police to take urgent action. He confirmed that the identities of the victims had been established and that the incident took place in the days leading up to Eid.
“The video is deeply disturbing, and we have moved quickly to ensure justice is served,” said Bizenjo in a statement. “A terrorism case has been registered under the state’s name and one suspect has already been arrested. We will not let external pressure influence the investigation.”
Balochistan government spokesperson Shahid Rand held a press conference in Karachi, shedding light on the ongoing investigation. He explained that the police and the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) have been deployed to the area, and the authorities are using data from NADRA (National Database and Registration Authority) and the Excise Department to identify all individuals involved in the crime.
He also revealed that while the victims’ families had not initially reported the murders, the state had stepped in as the complainant. “In cases like this, the tribal system often complicates matters, but the state will ensure accountability,” Rand said.
Due to the region’s tribal customs, it is not uncommon for families to avoid reporting such incidents to authorities. However, the provincial government has committed to treating this case seriously, ensuring the perpetrators face legal consequences.
This incident highlights the rising concerns over gender-based violence in Pakistan, with many urging the government to prioritize such cases and ensure swift action. As the investigation continues, questions are being raised about the effectiveness of law enforcement in tribal areas and the role of the state in curbing such heinous crimes.
