Houthis Detain 11 UN Staff in Yemen on Espionage Allegations

SANA’A: Yemen’s Houthi rebels have detained 11 employees of the United Nations on suspicion of spying for the United States and Israel, international media reported.

According to foreign news agencies, the detentions took place earlier this week following an Israeli airstrike that killed the Houthi-appointed Prime Minister along with nine cabinet ministers of the Ansar Allah group.

A Houthi official claimed that the UN staff members were accused of aiding “American and Israeli aggression” by engaging in espionage activities.

The arrests come in the wake of intensified tensions after last week’s strike, which wiped out nearly half of the Houthi cabinet, marking one of the most severe blows to the group’s leadership in recent years.

The United Nations has yet to issue an official statement regarding the fate of its detained employees.
