NEW DELHI: The United States has deported hundreds of Indian nationals this year as part of a continuing crackdown on illegal immigration.
According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, a total of 2,790 Indian citizens residing illegally in the U.S. have been verified and repatriated since January 2025.
Jaiswal stated during the ministry’s weekly press briefing that India remains firmly opposed to illegal migration and consistently advocates for safe, orderly, and legal pathways for people seeking to work or live abroad.
He further revealed that around 100 Indian citizens have also been deported from the United Kingdom after their Indian nationality was confirmed.
The spokesperson emphasized that every deportation follows a standard verification process: when an individual claims to be an Indian national but lacks legal status in another country, Indian authorities conduct a detailed background check and citizenship verification before repatriation.
Recent deportations included a 73-year-old Sikh woman from Punjab, who was detained by U.S. immigration authorities in California during a routine inspection and was deported to India in September.
Indian officials reiterated that the government is committed to discouraging illegal migration and promoting lawful means of travel and employment abroad.
The issue has become a growing concern for India, as many of its citizens continue to attempt illegal entry into countries like the United States in search of better opportunities, only to face detention and deportation.
