KARACHI: Unemployed Pakistanis and those in search of lucrative jobs abroad to become rich overnight are being lured to Cambodia in the guise of attractive jobs, and hundreds of Pakistanis have been subjected to bonded labor and violent acts for months in the poor Asian country.
According to FIA Karachi Director Noman Siddiqi, on social media a lot of jobs in the IT sector, call centers, engineering and other professional fields are advertised in Cambodia.
He said that Pakistani youths were lured by Indian agents, especially in the Gulf countries, including the UAE and Saudi Arabia. For the payment of one to two thousand dollars, lucrative jobs are promised in Cambodia.
According to FIA sources, youths in Lahore and Karachi are also being lured and sent abroad by these agents. More than 20 people, including a woman, have been de-reported from Cambodia in recent weeks.
Sohail Mahmood Sheikh, SHO of Anti-Human Trafficking Circle Karachi, said that after interrogating 20 people, including the woman, 14 inquiries and two cases have been registered so far.
He said that young people who arrived in Cambodia in the lure of attractive jobs had their passports confiscated and were forced to work in the suburbs of Cambodia as bonded labor and in squalid call centers.
Many Pakistanis fled from these places of labor and were deported after they contacted the embassy of Pakistan.
On the complaint of the Pakistani mission on these complaints, two weeks ago, the local administration rescued more than 100 Pakistanis from such centers, but a large number of Pakistanis were still allegedly held hostage and forced into labor in remote areas of Combodian cities.
Sources said that a large number of such people belong to Punjab.
FIA officials say that some foreigners in Karachi or Lahore are also involved in this business, which is being investigated.
