IHC disposes of Imran’s plea against jail trial in cipher case

Chief Justice says jail trial of former prime minister in cipher case is necessary for his own security.

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court on Monday disposed of a writ petition filed by former prime minister and PTI chief Imran Khan against his trial in the cipher case inside the jail.

The ruling in the case was reserved on Oct 12th which was today read out by IHC Chief Justice Aamir Farooq.

The short order said that the trial of the former prime minister inside the Adiala jail was necessary to ensure his security.

The court also maintained that the PTI chief can approach the trial court regarding any reservations concerning the proceedings in the court.

It may be noted that Imran was arrested on August 5 in the Toshakhana case but the high court on Aug 28 suspended his three-year sentence.

However, he was kept in the jail in the cipher case. He is accused of disclosing the classified message contained in the cipher which was sent by Pakistan’s ambassador to the US and later misplacing it.

However, today Imran’s counsel Sardar Latif Khosa told the high court that it was the prosecution not Imran who disclosed the content of the cipher.

He claimed that the cipher had not been misplaced but was available in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
