IMF Calls for Reforms in Pakistan’s Anti-Corruption Agencies

ISLAMABAD: The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has urged Pakistan to implement comprehensive reforms in its anti-corruption institutions, including the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), and provincial anti-corruption departments, to enhance their independence and effectiveness.

According to the IMF’s governance and corruption report, these agencies should operate autonomously, and the process for appointing the NAB chairman should be improved to strengthen high-level corruption investigations.

The report also recommended enhancing NAB’s investigative capabilities and ensuring accountability within these organizations.

The IMF suggested the establishment of a central authority comprising the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), Parliament, and the Establishment Division to digitize and publicly disclose assets, powers, and resources of senior government officials to promote transparency and accountability.

Furthermore, the IMF called for a risk-based approach within NAB, FIA, and provincial anti-corruption bodies. It emphasized better coordination and information exchange among NAB, the Auditor General of Pakistan, and the FBR to detect suspicious transactions and pursue corruption cases more effectively.
