IMF program focused on stabilization of economy: minister

Says reforms imperative in almost all sectors, especially taxation, energy and state-owned enterprises.

ISLAMABAD: The government on Sunday reiterated its resolve to boosting export-led growth besides identifying agriculture and information technology as crucial sectors to achieve the results.

At a meeting with farmers in Kamalia town on Sunday, Minister for Finance Muhammad Aurangzeb said International Monetary Fund (IMF) program was focused on stabilization of economy, adding due to the prudent policies of the government the targets were being achieved and all economic indicators were showing positive trends.

The government has also achieved macroeconomic stability, a crucial foundation for GDP growth, he added. The minister was confident that the economy would transition towards sustainable growth next year.

For sustainable growth, the minister said that reforms were imperative in almost all sectors especially taxation, energy and state-owned enterprises. Many state-owned entities have been marked for privatization.

Moreover, to expand the tax net, the government as working to simplify the taxation process, ensure digitization.

About the rising energy tariffs, the minister said that these would decrease as efforts were being made to minimize leakages and reforms were being made in the distributing companies on coordination with the private sector.
