ISLAMABAD: Opposition leaders have expressed serious concern over the health of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former prime minister Imran Khan, alleging that he was taken from jail to hospital without informing his family or party leadership.
Addressing a press conference in Islamabad on Tuesday, Leader of the Opposition in the Senate and head of the opposition alliance, Raja Nasir Abbas, said reports had emerged that Imran Khan’s health deteriorated while he was in jail, after which he was shifted to a hospital. He claimed neither Khan’s family nor the party was officially informed about the situation.
“We are deeply concerned about the health of the PTI founder. It has come to light that he was taken to hospital due to illness and later returned to jail, yet his family was not even informed,” Raja Nasir Abbas said, warning that authorities would have to answer for what he termed unjust treatment.
PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, who was also present at the press conference along with senior leader Salman Akram Raja, said the party’s last meeting with Imran Khan took place on December 20. Since then, he added, repeated requests for meetings have been denied despite legal petitions being filed.
“A newspaper reported that Imran Khan was shifted to hospital and then brought back to jail, but no details were shared about his illness,” Barrister Gohar said. “This has caused serious concern among the party and his family. We strongly condemn this secrecy.”
He further demanded that meetings with Imran Khan should not be blocked until February 8, calling for immediate access to the party founder. The opposition alliance has announced February 8 as a “Black Day” to protest what it calls the political crisis arising from last year’s general elections.
Salman Akram Raja said that meetings with both Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi were not being allowed, which he described as unacceptable. He stressed that Khan’s personal physician has no political affiliation and should be permitted to examine him.
“We have filed petitions for meetings, but today we learned that the Islamabad High Court has set aside our plea,” Salman Akram Raja said. “Denying family members and a personal doctor access is an act of oppression.”
Opposition leaders warned that continued restrictions and lack of transparency regarding Imran Khan’s health would further deepen political tensions in the country.
