Imran, Qureshi indicted in cipher case

Both PTI leaders plead not guilty of charges of violating Official Secrets Act while in power.

RAWALPINDI: The special court indicted former prime minister Imran Khan and ex-foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi in the cipher case in the Adiala jail on Wednesday.

The charge sheet accused them of violating the Official Secrets Act when they were the prime minister and foreign minister.

The charges were read out to the two jailed leaders of the PTI by special court judge Abual Hasnat Zulqarnain. However, they pleaded not guilty.

Angry Imran said that he had exposed both the foreign abd international establishments and that may also be added to the charges

He said it was a joke that after ousting his party from power through a conspiracy he was being accused of violating the Official Secrets Act.

He also said that this entire drama was being staged to save former army chief Qamar Javed Bajwa.

Imran said that he was not afraid of the outcome of the case, but asked if the trial could be fair when media was not allowed to cover the proceedings.

Meanwhile, Qureshi said he was innocent but had been implicated in the case.

According to the charge sheet, the FIA in its findings said that the cipher was a top secret diplomatic communication but the then prime minister and foreign minister used it for their political objectives by sharing its contents with their party leaders.

The cipher was sent by then Pakistani ambassador to the US Asad Majeed from Washington in March 7, 2022.

Imran allegedly shared the cipher with unconcerned people to use it for his political purposes putting the entire cipher communication security system at risk.
