Imran, Qureshi sentenced to 10 years’ RI in cipher case
Sentence awarded under official secret Act 1923.
RAWALPINDI: Former prime minister Imran Khan and ex-foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi were on Tuesday sentenced to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment (RI) in the cipher case.
The verdict was announced by special court judge Abual Hasnat Zulqarnain in the Adiala jail.
The sentenced was awarded to the two political leaders under section 5 and 9 of the Official Secret Act 1923 and 34 of Pakistan Penal Code. They were convicted for making a highly secret diplomatic document public.
The the cipher case had been lodged against former prime minister Imran Khan and ex-foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi.
During the hearing of the case by Special Court Judge Abual Hasnat Zulqarnain, Imran Khan, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, their families and lawyers of the accused and prosecutors were present
Earlier, the court had recorded the statements of former ambassador to the US Asad Majeed, former principal secretary to the ex-prime minister Azam Khan and over 25 other witnesses.
It may be mentioned here that the verdict has come about 10 days before the general elections in the country.
The party of Imran Khan has already been striped of its election symbol and its candidates are contesting the election on different symbols as independent candidates.
