ISLAMABAD: In a major political development, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan has expressed willingness to engage in talks with the government following a recent offer extended by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
According to national media reports, Imran Khan gave the green light for negotiations during a meeting with PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan at Adiala Jail on Monday. However, the former premier emphasized that any dialogue must take place away from the glare of television cameras to ensure meaningful outcomes.
PTI insiders revealed that the party is now preparing to formally approach the government to move forward with the dialogue process. The party believes previous efforts at negotiations were derailed due to excessive media scrutiny, and this time, a more cautious and focused approach is needed.
PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan confirmed that he had conveyed Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s proposal to Imran Khan. However, he declined to share any details regarding the discussions or the direction of talks as advised by Khan. “I cannot disclose what was discussed between us,” he said.
This development follows Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s recent speech in the National Assembly, where he invited PTI to join national-level talks. At the time, Barrister Gohar welcomed the initiative, though PTI circles made it clear that no progress could occur without Imran Khan’s explicit consent.
Sources further revealed that Imran Khan wants the talks to have the backing of the military establishment. One insider noted that the former prime minister is even willing to meet a representative from the establishment to facilitate the process.
The development comes amid growing calls for political reconciliation in the wake of recent cross-border tensions with India. It remains to be seen whether these behind-the-scenes discussions will lead to a significant breakthrough or fade like previous efforts.
