INDIA: A REGIONAL BULLY

Truly said that being a neighbour of India is not less than a challenge. None of its neighbours is happy with it as they face problems along their borders in which India has either grabbed their territory or stakes claims on their territory

Since inception India started behaving as a colonial power as it inherited a huge landmass which never was organized in history in such an orderly manner with an elaborate system of governance left by British colonial masters

Partition Era Fraud/ Duplicity

On Hyderabad Daccan and Junagarh India’s yardstick was religious while it (India) pleaded for secularism; it was argued that Muslim rulers could not stay independent or join Pakistan when majority were Hindus

On Jammu and Kashmir, Instrument of Accession became strong argument for Indian leaders. But when confronted with protestations from Pakistan supported by international community, Nehru took matter to UN Security Council & pledged to hold a plebiscite under UN supervision – a promise successive Indian governments never fulfilled either with Kashmiri people or Pakistan

Current Hindutva dispensation under Modi in India has now reoccupied disputed territory of Jammua& Kashmir on 5th August 2019, by revoking of Articles 370 and 35-A which allowed Jammu & Kashmir a special status. Even ‘special status’ has been changed without seeking consent of Kashmiri people

India Dented Pakistan’s Territorial Integrity

India has always been on the look out to create/ exploit an internal security situation of a country. It inflamed internal situation of East Pakistan in 1971. With direct military involvement helped the rebels leading to dismemberment of the country. Prior to 1971 war India invaded Pakistan in 1965 but Pakistan repulsed that invasion

India is supporting anti-state elements in Balochistan and Tehreek Taliban Pakistan (TTP) to cause terrorism in country. Former US Secretary Defense, Chuck Hagel, acknowledged India’s interference in Pakistan by using Afghan territory

Kulbhushan Yadev, a serving Naval Officer with Indian intelligence agency, RAW (Research and Analysis) was arrested on 03 March 2016 from Balochistan. He confessed of committing terrorist acts in Balochistan and Karachi while operating from Iranian port city of Chabahar where he ran a ‘jewelry business’ as a front entity

Prior to Kalbhushan’s arrest in February 2014, Ajit Doval, the current NSA of Modi regime in his address at the Sastra University while delivering the Nani Palkhivala Memorial Lecture in 2014 had threatened Pakistan of breaking away its Balochistan province

Besides, Indian governments of time particularly current dispensation have been staging false-flag operations (inside India) and putting blame on Pakistan as part of diversionary tactics to deflect public view from internal issues, or as an electoral gimmick etc.

India had carried out a false-flag operation at Pulwama (14 Feb 2019) killing more than 40 soldiers of CRPF (central Reserve Police Force. In an interview Satyapal Malik, then Governor IIOJK exposing Modi on Pulwama incident (https://thewire.in/politics/satya-pal-malik-full-interview-pulwama-modi)

Meanwhile, Modi tried to materialize the false-flag operation as planned and sent its war planes inside Pakistan that threw their payload on a mountain top near Balakot. Pakistan Air Force’s Operation Swift Retort brought down two of India’s planes and arrested Pilot Wing Commander Abhinandan. He was sent to India back with a bleeding nose

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka had faced interference from successive Indian governments when Tamils in country started agitation for a separate homeland. India forced an agreement upon Sri Lanka in 1987 under which it attained the right to send its ‘peace keeping’ troops to Sri Lanka

Tamil Tigers’ leader Prabhakaran, considered to be an Indian pawn was detained in New Delhi’s Ashoka Hotel when Late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was in Sri Lanka to sign a ‘peace deal’ with President Jayewardene

So much was Indian arrogance that on one hand it pushed deal through President Jayewardene’s throat and on other detained Prabhakaran as its surrogate. It was at time of departure of Rajiv Gandhi at the airport when a Sri Lankan soldier hit Rajiv Gandhi with the butt of his rifle just to show abhorrence of a common Sri Lankan against India

Despite signing an agreement with Sri Lanka, India failed to maintain peace in Island and within months its troops had to have a hasty withdrawal in 1990 after incurring heavy casualties and earning hatred from Sri Lankans and Tamil Tigers

Indian bullying was subsequently paid back by the Tamil Tigers who killed Rajiv Gandhi in a suicide attack in 1991. Thus, a monster created by India consumed its own master

In 2015, Sri Lanka expelled Colombo station chief of India’s spy agency (Research and Analysis Wing) in the run-up to presidential election being involved of helping the opposition oust President Mahinda Rajapaksa

Nepal

Nepal, an independent country even during British rule, has been suffocated frequently due to Indian bullying, especially through blockade of transit facilities, the last being in 2015. After 2015 Indian blockade, Nepal decided to look up to China for transit facilities, something disliked by India

To add insult to injury, sequel to abrogation of Article 370 of Indian Constitution India issued a new map which not only merged Ladakh and Aksai Chen into Indian territory but also Nepalese territories of Kalapani, Lipulekh and Limpiyadhura—an area of 335 square kilometers

Bangladesh

Bangladesh despite being close to India under current prime minister Sheikh Hasina has a serious complaint over water sharing of River Teesta – flowing from India to Bagladesh. India has not been allowing the Bangladesh share of water from said river

Besides, there is often news of firing incidents between Border Security Force of India and Border Guard Bangladesh, a paramilitary force responsible for the border security of Bangladesh

Modi government got Sheikh Hasina embarrassed when 1.9 million Bengalis in Assam lost Indian citizenship under Citizens Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC). Both CAA and NRC have been passed by Modi government

Afghanistan

Afghanistan is an interesting case with which Indian government claims to have best of relations. But it was same Afghanistan under Soviet occupation that India used to call Mujahideen as terrorists. And the same Mujahideen are now ruling the country

Again, with imposition of CAA and NRC India disallowed entry to Muslim refugees coming from Afghanistan which displayed Modi government’s clear bias against Muslims anywhere in country or neighbourhood

Bhutan

Bhutan has small territorial disputes with China. Among all contentious places, key issue is a strategic plateau called Doklam – situated close to tri-junction between India, Bhutan and China.

India is pressurizing Bhutan not to cede any of its (Bhutan) claimed territory to China in any negiated settlement. India does not like China’s presence near Siliguri Corridor, known as the Chicken’s Neck, a 22km stretch that connects the Indian mainland with its north-eastern states

Maldives

India has unwanted military presence in Maldives. There have been public demands from Maldives for expulsion of Indian military from their country. By maintaining its military/ intelligence footprint India has been making and breaking governments in Maldives. It is deeply involved in the internal politics of Maldives and has been propping up politicians to serve its interests

Tail Piece

Recent Sino-Indian standoff is likely to impact smaller states of South Asia to choose China as a reliable ally, much to chagrin of Indian policy makers. India better should learn the lesson that hegemons in whatever colour or persuasion have no room in 21st Century
