WASHINGTON: A senior advisor to U.S. President Donald Trump has accused India of financially aiding Russia in its war against Ukraine by continuing to purchase Russian oil.

According to Reuters, Stephen Miller, Deputy Chief of Staff under Trump and one of his most influential advisors, made the remarks during an interview on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures.

Miller stated, “President Trump has made it absolutely clear that it is unacceptable for India to be helping fund this war by buying Russian oil.”

His comments represent one of the strongest criticisms of India from Trump’s circle, despite India being a key U.S. ally in the Indo-Pacific region.

Miller added, “People will be shocked to learn that India is almost on par with China in terms of Russian oil imports. It’s a staggering reality.”

The Indian embassy in Washington has not yet responded to the accusations. However, Indian government sources told Reuters that New Delhi will continue to purchase Russian oil despite U.S. pressure.

In response to India’s continued energy and defense dealings with Moscow, the U.S. imposed a 25% tariff on Indian imports starting Friday.

President Trump has also warned that countries continuing to buy Russian oil could face tariffs of up to 100% on their exports to the United States if Russia does not reach a peace agreement with Ukraine by the August 8 deadline set by Trump.
