SRINAGAR: The Election Commission of India has announced that elections for the powerless occupied Jammu and Kashmir assembly will be held this year after a gap of 10 years.
According to media reports, this will be the first election to be held in the occupied territory after India abolished the special status of occupied Kashmir on August 5, 2019.
The state election in occupied Kashmir will be held in three stages from September 18 to October 1 and the counting of vites will be finalized on October 4.
The election commission said that 8.7 million voters will use their right to franchise to elect 90 members of of the state assembly.
The so-called assembly of occupied Kashmir has no powers at all except managing culture and education while the main powers will continue to remain rested with the central government of Narendra Modi.
In June this year, election for the five seats of Lok Sabha was in occupied Kashmir in which, according to the Indian election commission, the turnout remained 58pc.
The state election in occupied Kashmir was last held in 2014 after which the BJP of Narendra Modi had formed a coalition government with the People’s Democratic Party.
