NEW YORK: Diplomats, journalists, civil society activists and Kashmiri and Pakistani community leaders here condemned Indian bids of changing the special status of occupied Kashmir by settling outsiders in the disputed territory.
They were speaking at a gathering arranged by the consulate of Pakistan in New York in collaboration with Pakistan’s Permanent Mission to the UN on the fifth Youme Istehsal Kashmir.
A photo exhibition was also organized to highlight atrocities committed by Indian occupation forces in occupied Kashmir.
Speaking on the occasion, Consul General Aamer Atozai shed light on the significance of the day and the continued struggle of the Kashmiri people for their right to self-determination. On Aug 5, 2019, India took the illegal unilateral decision to abolish the special status of Kashmir.
At the event, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN Munir Akram spoke about the rampant human rights abuses in occupied Kashmir by Indian occupation forces and called upon the international community to fulfill its commitment of giving the right to self-determination to the people of Kashmir promised to them under the UN Security Council decades ago.
The other speakers condemned the illegal and unilateral measures taken by India to alter the demographic and political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir, in violation of international law and UN Security Council resolutions and emphasized the need for international intervention to resolve the issue for peace in the region.
They called upon the UN to implement the Security Council resolutions and stop India from carrying out a systematic change to the demography of the disputed territory by settling outsiders there.
