India, China Hold Talks to Resume Border Trade After Five Years

NEW DELHI: India and China are in talks to restart border trade after a five-year hiatus, marking a symbolic step toward improving bilateral ties.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that discussions are ongoing to facilitate trade at all designated border points, including Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand, Shipki La Pass in Himachal Pradesh, and Nathu La Pass in Sikkim.

Historically, trade between the two neighbors via Himalayan routes was limited in volume but strategically significant. Relations were strained following deadly troop clashes in 2020, which affected both trade and diplomatic engagement.

Analysts say global trade disruptions caused by U.S. tariffs under former President Donald Trump have also prompted India and China to ease tensions and restore economic cooperation.

Efforts to normalize ties include agreements on direct flights and tourist visas. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is expected to visit New Delhi soon, following Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar’s visit to Beijing in July.
