An alarming report by Genocide Watch, an international organization that monitors and works to prevent genocide, has raised concerns about the treatment of Muslims in India.

According to the organization, India has reportedly crossed seven of the ten stages of genocide, signaling an increased risk of large-scale violence against its Muslim population.

The report, published in February 2026, notes a significant rise in hate speech, anti-Muslim rallies, and discriminatory policies since Narendra Modi became Prime Minister. It highlights systematic marginalization, legal exclusion, and widespread social discrimination against Muslims.

Muslims make up roughly 14.2% of India’s population, yet their representation in the civil service is only 3%, and in the police force just 4%. Millions are excluded from legal protections and decision-making processes.

In Assam, over seven million people face the risk of losing citizenship, with ten new detention centers recently established, disproportionately affecting Bengali Muslims.

Genocide Watch also pointed to alarming trends in online content and propaganda. Hindu nationalist groups are reportedly promoting violence against Muslims under the pretext of self-defense, while police often arrest Muslim victims rather than perpetrators during attacks.

Currently, Muslims account for 19% of prisoners in Indian jails.

The organization has called for an immediate halt to hate rallies and training camps, warning that continued escalation could have catastrophic consequences.

This report comes amid growing international scrutiny of India’s policies toward its Muslim population and highlights the urgent need for intervention to prevent further deterioration of human rights in the country.
