NEW YORK: Ambassador Munir Akram, the permanent representative of Pakistan to the UN, has said that India has denied Kashmiris their inalienable right to self-determination in contravention of international law, the UN charter and the UNSC resolutions.
He said the last 76 years had witnessed exemplary sacrifices rendered by different generations of Kashmiris in their legitimate, just and indigenous struggle for freedom from India’s illegal and immoral occupation.
Ambassador Akram made these remarks while addressing a youth delegation at the Pakistan Mission. The delegates belonging to different countries were in New York to attend a three-day Global Peace Summit.
The ambassador said the ongoing situation in the Middle East was a warning that if the long-festering disputes which involved the question of the right to self-determination were not resolved, the conflicts could become more aggravated, threatening regional peace and stability in the process.
He informed the delegates about the history of Kashmir Black Day and threw light on the various facets of the Kashmir freedom struggle. He said the day was commemorated as a reminder to the international community of its commitments to the people of Jammu and Kashmir and to express solidarity with them.
Ambassador Akram appreciated the youth’s commitment to peace building and fighting the climate change threats. He said that the involvement of the youth in matters that were critical to shaping a bright future was commendable.
He said technology brought the youths belonging to different cultures, backgrounds and regions together on a shared agenda, stating that it formed unity of thought and action for positive outcomes.
In her remarks, Ms Caira, Global Peace Ambassador, thanked the Pakistan Mission for hosting the youth delegates. She said such interactions were vital to creating a world of shared values. She highlighted the need for support to enable the youth to play their befitting role in promoting peace and stability in their communities as well as globally.
