PESHAWAR: A government report has blamed several departments for the deaths of 13 people in a flood in the Swat River on June 26.
The report was prepared by the Provincial Inspection Committee and given to Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Ali Amin Gandapur. It says the district administration, Irrigation Department, local government and Rescue 1122 did not do their jobs properly.
The report also says that there was poor coordination between the police, rescue teams, irrigation, and other departments during the emergency.
The chief minister has ordered action against the officers responsible. Departments have been given 60 days to take legal steps and begin disciplinary action.
Departments must fix their mistakes within 30 days. A special committee, led by the chief secretary, will check progress and report to the Chief Minister every month. Rescue 1122 will be improved, and a new safety plan for rivers will be made. Building along rivers must stop.
Across the province, 127 illegal buildings near rivers have been sealed, and construction on 682 kanals of land has been demolished.
The report also suggests creating 36 rescue stations, buying new equipment, and building 70 smaller rescue units. A digital system will also be set up to monitor flood situations.
On June 26, strong floods in the Swat River swept away 17 people. Four were rescued, 12 bodies were found, and one person is still missing.
