TEHRAN: Iran has announced that it will allow maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz on humanitarian grounds, according to Iranian media reports.
Authorities have issued special permits for ships carrying essential goods and relief supplies. These permits will apply to vessels heading toward Iranian ports and the Gulf of Oman.
However, tensions in the region remain high. Iran reportedly carried out a drone strike on a vessel linked to Israel, causing a fire onboard. There has been no immediate response from Israel regarding the incident.
In a related development, Malaysia’s government spokesperson stated earlier that Malaysian ships are being allowed to pass through the strait without paying any fees, with several vessels reportedly waiting in line.
Meanwhile, 18 Indian vessels carrying LPG, crude oil, and LNG are currently stranded in the Strait of Hormuz, raising concerns about a potential energy crisis in India, according to Indian media.
Iranian officials have indicated that only ships from “friendly countries” will be permitted to pass through the strait, and only after proper coordination with Iranian authorities.
